A Practical Approach towards Labour Union Best Practices; Employee and Industry Relations

To understand the Industrial Relations scenario and the rights and obligations of employers, employees and their trade unions
INTRODUCTION

It is often said that the company's needs and the worker's needs are diametrically opposed. The former wishes to maximize its profits and the latter to increase his share of those profits as wages.A harmonious relationship between the two may therefore appear at first sight to be only an unachievable ideal. Closer exam ination of their respective needs will however show interdependence. The common goal is the continued success of the company without which, there would neither be profits nor wages. Thus labor relationship must be such as to develop the fact of this common goal and make it the objective of each side to cherish the well being of the company, for the company is the source that can satisfy their respective needs.

The ultimate aim is to increase productivity so that an increase in wages need affect neither the level of profits nor cause inflation. This development can only be realized in a strategic alliance between the two partners. It is however alarming to note the confusion over 'productivity' and 'production'. The worker sees the increased lorry loads of the company's product leaving the factory and cannot understand the company's statement that it is losing. The managers too speak of lost production due to absenteeism, tardiness and inefficiency. The program will use a range of interactive activities - group and individual exercises, case studies and discussions. There will also be formal inputs of theory and models. The aim is to provide a focus for action that will maximize learning.
